It doesn’t take much really, to increase your confidence.
Sometimes it’s a new haircut, the right pair of shoes, a new pair of leggings (I see you Christy!). Those cost money, and investing in ourselves is a good idea.
But it doesn’t have to cost money. Something as simple as drinking the water you know you’ve been wanting to do, taking a walk after lunch or dinner like you keep saying you will, or finally posting on your blog after a year or 2 years away from it. These all have something in common… integrity.
Ideas, thoughts, strategies, habits you keep thinking about, contemplating, chewing on, telling people you’re going to start and then don’t. Those erode your confidence in huge amounts each time you break your own trust with yourself.
Stop doing it!
Okay, I get it. I know you can’t stop all of them at once. Well, technically you could. But I’ll let you get away with just ending the lack of integrity with one tiny habit or idea.
Want a battle plan for attacking it?
Step 1: Grab a piece of paper and a pen or open a blank digital document.
Step 2: Set a timer for 2 minutes.
Step 3: Write as fast as you can all the things you keep saying, thinking, wishing you could or would do.
Step 4: Close your eyes and take 3 really deep breaths in and out. Let all those things go and stop mentally beating yourself up for your lack of follow-through.
Step 5: Open your eyes gently, not all the way, and gently scan the list. You are looking for one thing from the list that jumps out at you or grabs you.
Step 6: Circle that thing and go do it (or a portion of it) right this very moment.
Step 7: I’m serious. Get off your duff and go do that thing. If it’s drinking water, go sip some right this moment. Don’t tell me you’re going to do it in a minute or that you’re comfortable or that it’s not convenient. Do not give yourself a chance to overthink it or underestimate it and tell yourself it doesn’t really matter and it’s not really worth it.
You cannot underestimate the power of consistent intentional action taken in the moment of inspiration. You cannot! If you do, you will never change, move, transform or transition into the best version of yourself that you know is sitting there waiting for you to just. do. something. today.
Step 8: If you haven’t done it yet, this is your last warning. This message will end and if you haven’t taken action by the time it ends, you will move on to something else, get distracted, and forget all about it. Then sometime later today you’ll remember and you’ll continue the erosion of your confidence in your ability to change and your integrity in your relationship with yourself.
Step 9: CELEBRATE! I’m saying this because I know that every single one of you reading this is an action taker. You want to change your life, you want to reach your goals, you believe in possibility, so you took some action. It may feel small, but here’s the thing. If we celebrate the small wins, we train our mind and body to look for more. That means tomorrow when you think about whether to do that thing, you’ll remember the big victory and the way it felt to do what you said you were going to do, and you’ll want that dopamine cascade of feel-good chemicals. Get wild. Get crazy. Over-celebrate the small wins and the big wins will want their day in the sun.
