Every interview we’ve done for the Invisible Illness film has taught me something new. I am amazed at how many healers and healing modalities there are to uncover and explore.
It’s a blessing and curse.
- Blessing that there are so many options for so many different people and health challenges.
- Curse in that it can be excruciatingly difficult to go from one modality to another, one healer to the next, looking for answers and not finding a solution.
One sure-fire solution that can transform the quality of life for every single person, is food. The way we eat, what we eat, when we eat. It all matters. It all contributes or detracts from who we are and who we become.
If you are not eating intentionally, if you are emulating bad habits of friends, siblings, parents, or popular media, think again. Consider how each food you consume affects your body and trust that your body can and will communicate with you. Don’t accept things like gas, bloating, constipation, and discomfort as normal or usual. They aren’t and there are a plethora of ways to remedy and deal with each of those issues.
For now, you can just start with these 5 simple strategies for extracting more nourishment, health and love in your relationship with food
5 Simple Strategies for Intentional Eating
- Sit down. Don’t try to eat your meal while you are still cooking, driving, arguing, talking on the phone, watching something or reading. Allow your body a respite from outside stimulus to absorb and process what you are taking in.
- Breathe. Most people hold their breath without realizing it. Without breath, your body goes into fight or flight mode and digestion stops. Breathe 3 deep breaths before starting your meal.
- Bonus points if you say some type of blessing or thanks to the people who grew, processed, prepared, and/or provided you with the food.
- Put your utensil down between bites. Too often we run through the day, barely figuring out what to eat or cook, and then we finally give our bodies some nourishment, only to scarf it down and move on. Which leads me to…
- Chew each bite at least 20 times. You’ve heard this before. It’s related to the busyness and all the previous habits. If you’re not rushed, you’re breathing deep, and you are putting your utensil down between bites, chewing your food enough will be easy. If you’re not doing #1-3, start at the top and build up your habits.
- Put down the cold water. I know we’re told we need to hydrate. And we do. But before or during a meal, especially with cold water is not going to help your digestion. In fact, you’re hindering it significantly. You’re throwing cold water on a hot fire and expecting it to stay hot. If you’re thirsty, try a small cup of warm water sipped throughout the meal.
Give it a try. One or all, at least once this week and see how it makes you feel. Does your food feel like it’s going down easier? Are you calmer while eating? How does that feel? If you feel resistant to any of the habits, explore that with some curiosity and kindness.
